Fruit Smoothie In A Bowl

Have you ever heard of a smoothie in a bowl?  According to my youngest sister who works in NYC, it’s a recent trend.  What is it?  It’s a smoothie…wait for it, served in a bowl (instead of a cup).  Intrigued, I thought I’d give it a go so I created this easy and quick fruit smoothie.

Fruit Smoothie In a Bowl Recipe
(1 serving)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen chopped strawberries, peaches and bananas (I used Dole Ready-Cut Fruit)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • (optional) 2 to 4 tablespoons of skim milk (The amount depends on how strong your blender is.)
  • (optional) sprinkling of chia seeds

Directions:

  1. In a blender, combine all of the ingredients (except chia seeds if you are using them) and blend them until they are smooth and creamy.
  2. (Optional)  If the mixture doesn’t blend well, add the milk to help it out a little.  (Note, I did not use liquid in my smoothie.)
  3. (Optional) Sprinkle some chia seeds on the top.

Is it a smoothie?  Is it a fun flavored yogurt?  Is it a frozen treat?  Yes, yes, and yes.  Since I’ve not actually seen this infamous “NYC smoothie in a bowl” phenomenon in person, I took to the interwebs to see what was up.  Some restaurants seem to add oats and others add granola to their smoothie bowl party.  Those are great additions so feel free to add it to this smoothie recipe.

Today I opted for a smoothie that required as few ingredients as possible.  Fruit and yogurt.  I don’t think it can get more healthy or simple than that!  And you know what, it tastes SO delicious.  Simple, simple, simple, folks.  That’s what I’m all about on this Monday.

Straw or not to straw?  Whatever floats your boat.  Can you see how it stands up on its own?  That’s what you want so that you can actually eat this with a spoon.  Though I suppose if it was a thin smoothie you could still eat it with a spoon.  I’m picturing slurping spoonfuls of the last bits of melted goodness at the end of a tasty ice cream sundae.

Strawberries, peaches, and bananas have officially become my new favorite fruit combo now.  Oh it’s so yummy!  Dole knew what it was thinking when they created it.  (The legal beagle in me wants to let you know that I’m not getting paid by Dole to say this.)  This is how it went down on Friday night…  I made the dreaded trip to the grocery store (I hate grocery shopping) and for some reason all of the fresh fruit looked like crap.  Naturally this annoyed me because my plans for a smoothie adventure might be put on hold.  I went to the freezer section to see what my options were (I stood there freezing to read the labels on the various brands), picked the bag I liked the best and crossed my fingers.  The result was a smoothie that tasted like it had delicious fresh fruit in it, but without the crappy looking stuff I had available to me in the fresh fruit aisle.

Even my hubby liked this smoothie!  That’s a first.  He’s not really into smoothies so that’s saying a lot.  I was pretty excited.     🙂

Final thoughts on this “smoothie in a bowl”…  I think serving a smoothie in a bowl is fun for a food blogger who can creatively show off the finished product in a unique way.  Although when I make this again, I’ll probably be sipping it out of a straw and glass.  Maybe I’m just not hip enough.     😉
