Oreo Truffles

I’m sure most of you have heard of Oreo truffles.  If not, they are truffles made out of…wait for it, Oreo cookies.  I first made them about eight years ago and they were a huge hit.  I’ve been racking my brain, trying to think of how to put a creative spin on this classic recipe.  I must have given my husband 15 options and then he finally asked my why I would change something that’s already delicious.  Hmmm.  Occupational hazard of a food blogger, I suppose.  I’m always trying to be creative and share recipes that stand apart from others.  While that’s not a bad goal, he reminded me that it’s okay to share a recipe that’s been around the block, especially if it’s a rich chocolate-y truffle treat like these Oreo truffles.     🙂

Oreo Truffles Recipe
(Makes about 40 truffles )

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14.3 ounce package) Oreo cookies
  • 1 (8 ounce package) light cream cheese
  • 1 to 1 and 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (depends on how heavy you coat each truffle)
  • sprinkles (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor and blend until they are fine crumbs.
  2. Add the cream cheese and blend until all the ingredients are combined.
  3. Roll the mixture into 1 tablespoon sized ball shapes.
  4. Chill the balls in the freezer for at least 15 minutes to harden.
  5. While the balls are chilling, melt the semi-sweet chocolate.
  6. Place the chilled ball into the melted chocolate and cover completely.
  7. Place the truffle onto parchment paper.
  8. (Optional) Immediately cover with sprinkles while the chocolate is still warm.
  9. Allow them to cool completely before serving.

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator or in a freezer friendly bag in the freezer.

Who knew that 3 simple ingredients could turn out an awesome truffle?  Plus, they’re super easy to make.  Make sure that the Oreo cookies are blended into fine crumbs so that your truffle balls are smooth.  This is one of those situations where chunky cookie bits are not the goal.

Add in the cream cheese and blend until you don’t see any more cookie crumbs.  In case you are wondering, you don’t taste the cream cheese at all.

02Oreo Truffles

Baking tip:  Once you’ve shaped the Oreo and cream cheese mixture into balls, I recommend chilling them in the freezer because they’re easier to roll in the melted chocolate when they’re rock hard.

To melt the chocolate chips, I used a double boiler approach.  I don’t own a device called a double boiler so I just used a Pyrex bowl on top of a pot with some water in the bottom.  For rolling the balls in the melted chocolate, I used the same technique when I made my Reese’s Pieces Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles.  I used a fork to dunk the ball into the melted chocolate and then tapped the side of the bowl to remove the excess chocolate.  The only serious side effect is that your spouse may wander into the kitchen to figure out what all the banging is about.  Then I used a tooth pick to slide the truffle off of the fork.  Feel free to head over to that other post for additional step by step pictures.  Do you have another technique for making truffles that works too?  I’d love to hear about it.

Tada!  Decadent Oreo truffles.  These truffles are a sweet treat even naked, so sprinkles aren’t required.  They just jazz them up a bit if you have a specific event in mind.

I did up some of my truffles with fun holiday sprinkles.  Suddenly they are truffles dressed for Christmas.

The hard chocolate shell is a lovely contrast with the rich and creamy filling.

I love handing out pretty truffles to my friends and family at Christmas time.  They look so fancy and gourmet-like which always empresses everyone.     🙂

    1. Tina says:

  13. mimi says:

beautiful! One question: how are these at room temperature? Are they stable? Cause I’d love to put them out at a party, but not if they get too soft… Thanks!

    1. Tina says:

Great question! I’ve left mine out for about 3 to 4 hours and they hold up great. They will definitely be soft in the middle, but the chocolate shell stays hard and helps to keep the truffle looking beautiful. 🙂

    2. Tina says:

Also, one more important note, take care of the fact that they do have cream cheese in them. The temperature of the room will depend on how long you can SAFELY keep them out (i.e. before they spoil). So it could be 3-4 hours now, but 20 minutes in the summer time. Everyone seems to have different opinion of what that duration is, but I found some helpful information on http://www.usfoodsafety.com/foodsafetyexpert.aspx. I know you are an great chef (because I’ve seen your awesome blog) and are most likely aware of this, but the attorney in me wanted to issue that disclaimer (don’t hate me). 😉 Also, I thought it would be helpful for those people reading your question who don’t bake as much as you and me. 🙂 Thanks so much again for stopping by!

  15. Oreo truffles have to be one of my favorite go-to recipes when going to a church event or party or something. So delicious and so easy! My favorite (Christmasy) variation is to use mint oreos and top the truffles with a little crushed peppermint. Delectable!

    1. Tina says:

I love mint, so those sound delicious!

  16. Caitlin says:

I totally do the same thing- try to make a great recipe even better! But sometimes, just a little decoration makes all the difference! I had these at a cookie swap last year, but I’d never seen the recipe. Now that I know they are so easy, I’m going to make them! thanks!

    1. Tina says:

I totally agree! Oh I’m so glad you saw this recipe and I hope you love them as much as I do. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.
