Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies

Is it normal to always have two jars of peanut butter in the house at all times?  I feel like I’m running low when I’m down to one unopened jar.  I guess it means that I love peanut butter… a lot, or I’m just being ridiculous.  (My husband suspects both may be true.)     😉

My latest adventure with peanut butter is this awesome sweet and savory snack.  It’s a combination of peanut butter and chocolate covered Chex with pretzels, and peanut butter M&Ms.

Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies Recipe
(makes about 5 cups)

Ingredients:

 Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in the microwave.  Use 30 second increments, stirring in between sessions.
  2. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a big zip top bag (I used a gallon sized bag), add the cereal squares and melted chocolate mixture.  Seal the bag and shake it until the cereal is evenly coated.
  4. Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag again and shake it until the cereal is evenly coated.
  5. Add the pretzels and M&Ms, seal the bag again and shake it some more.
  6. Pour the entire mixture onto a baking sheet and let it set until the melted chocolate mixture has hardened.  (I placed it in the refrigerator to speed up the process.)

Have you heard of a snack called Puppy Chow… the one that humans eat?  I’d never heard of it until I saw tons of recipes for it on pinterest.com.  I initially thought it was a recipe for dog food.  You know, because it’s called puppy chow and all?  In fact, it’s human food that simply looks like puppy chow.  (And thus the name I suppose.)  That just messes with my brain so I’m calling this a “Muddy Buddies” recipe, which is another common name for the same snack.

This snack is super duper easy to make.  I promise you that you can’t mess it up.  It does start out looking kind of messy though, but it turns into something fabulous (I’m singing that last part).  Just wait and see what my precious powdered sugar turns this into!

Oh yea!  Powdered sugar rocks!  If you’re new to my blog, I’m a little obsessed with it.     😉  This was my first time covering pretzels with the stuff.  Brilliant idea!

Chex cereal covered in peanut butter and chocolate!  Heaven, I tell you.  I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to try this trendy “puppy chow” snack.  I love sweet and salty together, so I added some pretzels to the mix.  You can add whatever shape you want, as much of it as you want, or even skip it entirely if you want a purely sweet snack.

I also added some fun peanut butter Easter egg candies to the mix to celebrate the upcoming holiday.  Of course for any other day of the year you can add regular peanut butter M&Ms.  I wanted the peanut butter flavor to shine here, but you can certainly use regular M&Ms or any other similar chocolate candy instead.  Just like the pretzels, you can add more or less of it.  This is your snack!  See, I told you that you can’t mess this up.

Are you a peanut butter fan too?  What’s your favorite way to eat it?  My favorite way is right out of the jar!

  1. Haha I’m the same way with PB!! Always need a stash in the pantry! Oh man I’m craving muddy buddies so much right now! It’s dangerous when I make them, because my wife and I will easily down a whole batch of them within minutes!

    1. Tina says:

Now having made this, I can see why it’s so “dangerous.” I kept munching on it all day while it sat out on the counter. Yeeaaaaa, it didn’t last long. 😉

  2. Ashley says:

Totally totally normal : ) I always have the one opened jar and then a back-up. Necessity! And then I usually also have almond butter too. lol I haven’t made muddy buddies in so so long … which is largely due to the fact that I have ZERO self-control around them… it’s bad. Really bad haha have a great weekend!

    1. Tina says:

Yes, I’m normal! 😉 This snack is SO addicting and I too have no self control around this stuff…it was worth every bite!
You too have a great weekend Ashley! 🙂

  3. Danguole says:

I’d never had muddy buddies until this summer, can you believe it? I couldn’t stop eating them… And I probably would have zero control around these, too.

    1. Tina says:

I believe it! This was my first time having them…I can’t believe I’ve been missing them all this time. 😉

  4. It absolutely IS normal to have two jars of Peanut Butter in the house at all times. One for each hand! Hahaha! I’m a HUGE fan of peanut butter – so I could probably have a dozen and not feel to bad about that. These PB Muddy Buddies look delish!

    1. Tina says:

      Haha, that’s awesome!

  5. Adding pretzels is genius! Haha, I love my peanut butter too. Even more so in this snack mix!

    1. Tina says:

We should start a peanut butter club! 😉

  6. We love peanut butter too and especially my little Buddy, puppy. We go through it jars a week. I love this great little sweet snack another perfect idea for the Easter holiday. Take Care, BAM

  7. This is the perfect snack for easter! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Tina says:

      Absolutely! 🙂

  8. I have not yet made muddy buddies either! I’m too afraid of what it will do to my waistline when I eat the whole batch in one sitting!! I am SO obsessed with those peanut butter eggs!! They look like they are a perfect fit for this muddy buddy recipe Tina!! 🙂

    1. Tina says:

It’s definitely an addicting snack! That’s why I made a relatively small batch and gave the rest away to family. I wonder if there’s a way to healthify it? Hmm, putting my thinking cap on now. 🙂

  9. Tina, you seriously make me giggle… bcz I have 2 jars of the large pb in my cupboard! One is definitely NOT enough in this house! I’m in love with this recipe… I could really find this addicting. I’m all over it! (I even pinned it on a few boards!)

    1. Tina says:

It’s fun to know that what I think is not normal actually is to many others. 🙂 Isn’t blogging great!?
Thank you so much for pinning!! Have a lovely week, Gloria.

  10. I’m right with you, I like muddy buddies over puppy chow. The minute I hear puppy chow, I’m stepping away. I’m no dog. Can you imagine someone coming up to you at a party…”Hey, what are you having?” and you reply “Puppy Chow.” Too strange for me. Haha
This muddy buddy snack looks delicious! I love peanut butter (also have 2 jars at a time) and chocolate. Can’t beat that combination!

    1. Tina says:

Hehe…I’m glad that I’m not alone! Thanks. 🙂

  11. We love peanut butter too. I just went to the kitchen and counted how many I have in the pantry…6 jars..3 crunch, 3 creamy…so, you are not alone :-))
    Love these little crunchy treats!

    1. Tina says:

Haha…you are too funny! Thanks for making me feel normal. 🙂

  12. I can never have PB at home because I can go from three unopened jars to no peanut butter at all in mere minutes lol I love the stuff. This puppy chow thing looks delisha nd the sweet/salty combo sounds awesome!

    1. Tina says:

Hehe…ditto…I must buy peanut butter on a weekly basis! Plus, I’m the same way with Nutella too!

  13. PB m&ms are actually crack. They are far superior to any of the other flavours aka I cannot keep them near me! Seriously, if you want to be impressed by someone’s food consumption skills, watch me demolish a bag of those babies. SO GOOD.

    1. Tina says:

      Lol. You are too funny!

  14. I love muddy buddies SO much! And with all the pretzels and peanut butter?! Sign. me. up!!

    1. Tina says:

      You got it! 🙂

  15. Wow!! This is such a cute little chexmix of flavors!! YUM! I love how you added little chocolate colorful eggs to the mix! Perfect for Easter!! So fun and cute! And those PB cookies look amazing too!! YUM!

    1. Tina says:

Thanks so much! I appreciate you stopping by. 🙂

  16. Joanne says:

I have THREE jars on hand right now. Overkill or necessary? I’m going with necessary. These muddy buddies are an addiction waiting to happen!

    1. Tina says:

      Definitely necessary!! 🙂

  17. I love peanut butter too. Can’t live without it. It just makes everything better. Even though you’re supposed to buy the all natural kind, I hate how it separates and spills oil all over me when I open it. Some I’m a bad girl and buy Skippy. It just tastes better!

I love muddy buddies! Great idea adding in pretzels and peanut M&M’s. Yum!

    1. Tina says:

I’m the same as you! I try to buy all natural peanut butter every now and then because it’s healthier but I always resort back to my Skippy!

  18. These muddy buddies are aboslutely adorable, Tina, and they are so “Easter-y!” I think this is a necessary recipe to get me through the week! Pinned!

    1. Tina says:

Oh yea! Thanks for pinning. 🙂
